Proposal for the 2023 Kaira Looro Competition
The design concept begins with the idea of a participatory classroom, where each classroom unit is connected to a courtyard. This flexible interior space can expand into the courtyard to accommodate additional students or local residents.
Beyond being just a school, this proposal aims to serve as a community center for the village of Mankolikounda, offering various public spaces. This aggregated form not only provides a framework for potential future expansions but also allows for the construction to occur in multiple phases. In the site plan, the interlocking figure-ground relationship between outdoor and indoor spaces creates dynamic activity areas. The pushing and pulling of volumes generate courtyard spaces for play and gatherings along the main axis, while the perimeter misalignment creates outdoor spaces for sports and gardens.
The primary school becomes a vibrant village within a village, fostering a sense of community and promoting learning beyond the confines of traditional classrooms.
