Arezzo 2023

Set in Arezzo, this project examines the intersection of religion, politics, and architecture, illustrating how religious history shapes cultural and architecture behavior. Drawing inspiration from the town’s Fascist-era restoration, which strategically emphasized its medieval past to assert a specific identity, the video explores how religious narratives have been instrumental in shaping both the built environment and societal structures. By juxtaposing religious symbols, statues, and abstracted urban forms, the project visualizes the profound influence of faith on architectural production and civic life.

Arezzo’s architectural fabric becomes a site of reflection, where religious ideals are not only a part of the historical past but continue to inform the way cities are perceived and understood. The video weaves together symbols of power, governance, and faith, much like the Fascist manipulation of Arezzo's medieval heritage to project a nationalistic identity. Through its speculative lens, the project underscores the enduring role religion plays in shaping not only sacred spaces but also the broader cultural and political landscapes, demonstrating that the past continuously shapes the present. In this way, it invites viewers to contemplate how historical narratives, particularly those tied to religion, remain central to our understanding of architecture and urban form.
